‘Leading the Pack’: Real-Time Rails & the Future of Superannuation (Episode 1)
Welcome to Episode 1 of our Leading the Pack series — a practical, real-world look at how
Australia’s superannuation payments landscape is evolving as the industry prepares for
Payday Super and a shift toward real-time payment rails.
In 2023, OZEDI partnered with Zepto to build one of the first integrations between the New
Payments Platform (NPP) and a SuperStream gateway. In October that year, we processed
Australia’s first-ever NPP payment for superannuation.
Fast forward two years. After thousands of live transactions across a complex national
ecosystem, we’re sharing what we’ve learned — what’s working, where the friction points
are, and what needs attention before 1 July 2026.
The Superannuation Payments Ecosystem — Big, Complex, Centralised
A few numbers show just how large and interconnected this environment is:
- 980,000 employers paying superannuation
- 76 large APRA funds with 519 products (identified by USI)
- 713 small APRA funds
- 650,000 SMSFs — with around 300,000 actively receiving employer contributions
- 9 SuperStream gateways (including OZEDI) transmitting contribution data between
parties
And despite the size of the sector, an outsized share of contributions lands in just 84 bank
accounts — almost all held at the big four banks.
This is the environment that must rapidly modernise. The mandate is clear:
Every superannuation fund must have an NPP-enabled account by 1 July
2026.
Our latest data — from October 2025 — gives a grounded view of how close the industry is.
What We’re Seeing in the Data — October 2025 Snapshot
OZEDI processes superannuation payments using a simple but powerful routing path:
Attempt NPP → instantly fall back to BECS if the bank account is not NPP enabled
Here’s what October 2025 tells us:
Large APRA Funds
- 84 bank accounts receiving contributions
- 64 of 84 (76%) are NPP-enabled
- OZEDI processed payments to 62 of these accounts (74% of the market)
- Of those 62, 45 were NPP-enabled (73%)
Matching Gaps Still Exist
Even where NPP is enabled:
- 6 APRA fund accounts cannot currently auto-reconcile incoming NPP funds with their
SuperStream CTR - To ensure delivery, OZEDI re-routes these payments through BECS
Small APRA Funds & SMSFs
- Lower volume, but the overwhelming majority appear NPP-enabled
- These segments are tracking ahead of expectations
The picture: strong progress with some last-mile friction — particularly around
reconciliation and data matching.
Real-Time Rails Deliver Real-World Speed
To understand NPP’s operational impact, we analysed six months of payment processing
logs. The comparison is clear:
Real-time rails move faster, confirm sooner, and create fewer delays than the batch-
based world of BECS.
Importantly:
- NPP processing includes confirmation from the receiving fund
- This gives employers and payroll providers immediate certainty
- It also ensures contribution timestamps are precise — a critical requirement under
Payday Super’s compliance and penalty framework
Speed hasn’t been a major constraint yet, but it will matter when contributions are expected
to triple from 1 July 2026.
Real-time rails aren’t just “quicker” — they’re built for the regulatory and operational
reality that’s coming.
Our Recommendations — What the Industry Should Do Now
After two years of processing real-time super payments, here’s where we believe the
industry must focus:
1. Accelerate NPP readiness across all funds
76% enablement is encouraging, but the remaining 24% — particularly 6 larger funds —
must reach readiness well before July 2026.
2. Prioritise reconciliation capability, not just connectivity
Being NPP-enabled is only half the solution.
Reliable CTR matching via SuperStream is essential to avoid fallbacks, manual work, or
delays.
3. Employers & payroll providers should begin testing early
End-to-end testing now avoids a rush in mid-2026 and ensures a seamless transition to real-
time statutory payments. No-one wants a Big Bang in July 2026
4. Prepare for real-time contributions becoming the new normal
NPP isn’t a future concept.
It’s live, it’s working, and it’s already delivering speed, certainty and operational uplift.
The payments industry has announced that, after 36 years of operation, the BECS system can alternatively be
phased out by 2030 and all transactions will be delivered via the NPP
5. Adopt the new verification and validation tools
Employers will be able to validate the employee data in their payroll software against the
details held in the superannuation fund. This will minimise unwanted refunds
Real-time validation of BSB and account details can be added to payroll and accounts
payable software
